I've been studying jazz guitar off and on for several years. One of the most important pieces of advice is to listen to a lot of jazz. But I honestly don't really love jazz that much. When I do listen, I enjoy it, but it makes up about 10% of the music I listen to. And it's not just jazz. In the past I enjoyed practicing classical guitar, but listening to classical music felt like eating vegetables (filling, sort of satisfying, but not really what I wanted to do).
Instead, I love to listen to pop, alt and classic country, Americana, singer/songwriter music, and many other genres. But when I go home to practice, I don't want to work on that stuff usually. It seems boring in the practice room.
I enjoy practicing jazz chords and jazz soloing. I like reading music I don't know so I can hear what it sounds like. Working on pop songs seems boring, no matter how much I enjoy listening to them.
This is kind of messed up. I should practice the same music that I listen to. I'm sure it would make me a better musician. But I just can't motivate myself to do it.
