What does an extended neck do?

On the Ibanez RGD it is advertised that the neck is an inch longer to help the tone "thickness."
Can someone explain what this means in simple terms. (ELI5)
I am into playing heavy stuff and was just browsing around some 7-strings and that caught my eye.
