With all the posts about theory/modes lately, I have some advice

Learn piano. Seriously. There is no better instrument for visualizing and understanding theory. You don't have to become the next Franz Liszt or anything, but just knowing that the major scale is all the white notes from C-C, the minor is A-A, and that chords in C major are made by playing a triad of every other white key, that'll go a long way in helping you understand theory, as most of it was defined by classical pianists.
