Niche/Role of each profession spec/elite spec?

Does each profession spec/elite spec have a certain niche/role that it occupies best (condi dmg, pwr dmg, support, control, utility, etc.)? If so, what? I mainly play mesmer, but I'm looking to venture out to other professions, but I don't know as much about most of them and their various specs/elite specs.
