What items should I focus on to buy with gems?

This morning I noticed this post regarding the current sales and the pick especially got my attention. Honestly, I like the idea of a good pick that can mine everything and having unlimited uses. Combined with the Salvage-o-matic, I've got two of the four items that just frustrate me the most when I run out unexpectedly.

That said... what are other items that I should watch for an jump on? I prefer the unlimited use things and I plan to pick up most of the upgrades (collection items especially). But if its fun, I'll give it a go...
