To preface this, I'm a Norn Warrior, but there might as well be a pack of Skritt walking around in my armor. I love loot. I mean, I really love loot.
I pop every chest I can find. I kill almost all the trash I see. I do the LA puzzles whenever I'm able. I LOVE ME SOME CHESTS. The excitement of possibly being rewarded with cool stuff for doing your job is pretty awesome.
This stems from a few things:
When I was a kid, I read a ton of fantasy. Still do. Treasure is extremely important in just about all fantasy literature. Hell, TWO chapters into "The Hobbit" you've got Gandalf, Bilbo and the Dwarves finding named, storied weapons (not to mention enough gold to make everyone rich old bastards when they get back). I'm not gonna lie, that Troll treasure chest started me on the path I'm on.
Back when I was knee-high to a Charr, MMO's didn't exist, we had MUDs. With everything existing only in your head, you could convince yourself anything was awesome.
We did, however, have ARPGs like Diablo II. And the loot was insanely amazing. Piles of gold on the ground, gems flying everywhere, weapons popping out, sound effects … the whole nine.
So, what the hell am I getting at?
In short, the only area in which GW2 doesn't satisfy me is loot.
The world, ambiance and environment are the best I've seen in any game. Ever. On scale alone, it's unbelievable, and ANet should win more and more awards for the job they've done. It's a spectacular game...
BUT the feeling of "Holy crap, that was a wicked hard fight, and I just killed a Champion/Dragon/whatever ... something that tough must've been hording loot for ages!" just isn't there.
Once you've been swamped by bags upon bags of trashloot, a green drop 10 levels below you isn't fun anymore.
Caveats:
I'm VERY new to MMOs. A little WoW, some LotRO, but this is the first game i've ever had a max level character; so I don't really know the intricacies like many of you here.
The other factor here, is that I'm a pretty casual player, though not by choice. I work a full-time job, usually 50 hours, and I've got a wife and 3 month old that need a lot of time. I don't have hours upon hours to farm, and I'm probably never going to acquire any Legendaries; and I'm ok with that. I'm here to have fun.
I've got about 5 gold, and I'm ok with that, too. I don't play the TP, I've never gotten a drop that's sold for a big pricetag, and I'm still ok with all of it.
I don't expect precursors to just start showing up all the time, but there HAS to be a solution that makes everyone happy, or at least happier.
As a level 80, popping chests to find level 70 Blues is mildly annoying. It's like showing up at a picked over tag sale and settling 'cause all the good stuff's gone. And sure, I'll sell it, but for what, 5 silver?
Possible fixes:
- Even if an item's stats are useless to a max level character, maybe a higher chance of having a Unique skin? Maybe there's a tier of lower-level but Unique skinned weapons?
- Maybe a higher chance of chests dropping a bigger amount of silver?
- Maybe a chance for a chest to drop actual Gold?
- Maybe a chance to have a high-value salable-only item?
- Hell, even to bring back the higher dye drop rate would give everyone that spark of, "Oh, this is exciting!"
I don't even care about getting rich, I'd just like a little more loot joy from PvE. There's gotta be a way to do it. Would love to hear your thoughts.
TL;DR - Want more joy from chests/looting monsters without breaking the economy.
