Do classes have "counters" in pvp?

So I play a fair amount of spvp, but I guess ive never looked into this, but are there counters to classes?

So like, in pokemon battling, there are some pokemon that can (more or less) hardcounter others, for instance, Snorlax can hardcounter Heatran, because of its defensive traits and attacks (high sp def and earthquake, for those who understand the reference). In gw2 does such a system of checks and counters exist for certain classes?

Sorry pokemon is my only real frame of reference for competitive playing, besdies shooters.
