Is an Aether Ravenous Earth (+Foul Eruption) build even viable?

If not, then what's the point of the Aether damage on Foul Eruption?
AFAIK, the latter only procs on RE direct kills, but RE, by itself, deals no Aether damage at all.
Is there some kind of conversion shenanigan that I'm not aware of?
