Hey all. So I currently work at a local utility in the customer service department. In a conversation with my manager he mentioned that power dispatch would be a good career path to look into, so I started studying for my NERC RC cert. I went to talk to some of the people who work the dispatch desk to ask some questions, and the response I got wasn't a particularly positive one.
They told me that unless I have 4 years of dispatch experience, even with the cert it's likely I won't be able to find a place willing to hire me into that position. I asked how I could get some experience and they didn't really have an answer beyond the MISO Operator Training course.
Is that really the only option? I've been searching around on Indeed and even the "associate" or "training" operator positions seem to want at least a couple of years of experience (sans MISO, which I did apply for).
What would you recommend? Are there positions I should look into transferring to that would be a good first step towards dispatch?
Thanks!
