The Packers are going through some major changes this offseason, I think most will agree that it is time for change defense and I am sure there are slightly more misgivings around TT stepping down. All that being said the Packers enter an offseason with visible needs and a somewhat sketchy cap situation.
We have Rodgers under contract through the 2019 season but given his age(35) it obviously behooves us to extend him sooner rather than later. Which leads us to consider the next 4 players. Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson and Clay Matthews. These four players account for 26% of our cap. Generally speaking, having so much of your cap tied up in WRs/Aging(read fossilized) edge rushers does not bode well for winning a super bowl combine this with us having an obvious need for a pass rush on defense and you can see that only having 23ish million available against the cap can be an issue.
Player | Cap Hit | Dead Money | Cap Saved |
---|---|---|---|
Cobb | 12.750.000 | 3.250.000 | 9.500.000 |
Nelson | 12.550.000 | 2.300.000 | 10.250.000 |
Matthews | 11.400.000 | 0 | 11.400.000 |
I've excluded Davante because he just signed a huge contract and is obviously considered to be the future and I have included Clay despite my belief that he will either be cut or he will be extended and his remaining contract will be spread amongst the extended years.
A few notes.
All numbers are based on a 167 million dollar cap, after the season is done the cap number will almost certainly go up predictions are as high as 178 million.
These numbers do not change if done before or after June 1st
While our cap situation is not ideal We have already signed most of our pressing free agents Personally I hope we re-sign Morgan Burnett but will understand if we don't
Numbers are all pulled from Sportrac.com
