Hello, I’m a new grad student in STEM and going to school this fall for potentially funded masters. When I had applied, I was unable to secure an advisor and was given an offer for a course based program.
A few weeks after my admission, a professor had replied back and said he could take me on and transfer me over to research based degree a few months after I’m there, as he’s waiting for some funding. I was all set. The work is exciting enough. I have had minimal contact since where he just mentioned he definitely needs a student by fall and advised me on courses.
However, another professor (at the same school) emailed just now and asked me if I’m still interested. This professors work is much more inline with what I want to do.
Is it considered unethical to switch? I’m an international student and I’m unaware (outside of plagiarism) what sort of things are considered unethical.
Should I email my department dean for advice?
Right now I don’t have any info on what the potentially new advisor has lined up project wise. Is it ethical to ask beforehand?
Edit: wanted to add, I may save a significant amount of money by going with the new professor as then I wouldn’t have to pay the course based programs tuition fee for the first semester - as he would transfer me over before I arrive. Upwards of USD8-10k.
