How did you decide where to apply to graduate school?

I've been talking to my SO about his grad school applications, and he's trying to decide where to apply.
I read a lot of comments here (and on /r/askacademia) saying that if you're going to apply to graduate school with the goal of becoming an academic it's important to go to a top school in your chosen field. So, clearly looking up the top schools is part of it, but was that really all you considered?
