Can a dev tell me what the deal is with the prices?

Why did the prices get blown through the roof on items? Over ONE THOUSAND gems for a seafood tower? It used to be maybe 200ish. Everything is insanely priced now and the bubbles are basically worthless and get popped 100% of the time.
