Hotspot only works when WiFi is turned on?

Hi guys – got a weird issue and hoped somebody could help.

My home wi-fi gets spotty, so like to hotspot my 5G data on my Google Pixel 8 with my Mac sometimes for video calls. But it's suddenly stopped working.

I turn my hotspot on (5G is working on the phone), connect to it with the Mac (which works fine), but then the internet just doesn't work. The only way to make it work is activate WiFi on my Pixel – but then is my laptop picking up the 5G data or the WiFi? Why isn't my 5G data passing on to Mac unless WiFi is turned on?

I've tried resetting everything by the way and don't need to do any software upgrades or anything.

Anybody know what's up?
