Does GoogleFit double steps/calories counted when tracking both watch AND phone?

Pretty much as title says. Should I have step tracking turned off on my google fit PHONE app when I am wearing a watch/wearable that is also tracking with google fit? Are the phone and watch apps smart enough to acknowledge and account for eachother?
