Post Body

This is a pet peeve of mine in general and I was annoyed about it being on TV too.

Isabella says at the hospital that she and Gael do not have insurance. They live in Los Angeles. LA is in California.

California is not only one of the easiest places to get insurance regardless of your income, it is legally required to have insurance here, like the Affordable Care Act only it is continuing to be enforced whereas ACA is no longer enforced federally. This legal requirement has been in effect for a few years now.

If Isabella and Gael make under a certain amount of money, they qualify for Medi-Cal for 100% FREE. If they make a little more, they can get Covered California which is subsidized health insurance. When I was on it I paid as little as $1 to $12 a month (it varied depending on my income).

California is literally waging a war against people being uninsured. There are omnipresent ad campaigns informing people about Covered California and Medi-Cal. There is no way that Isabella shouldn't know about this. It takes an extreme amount of negligence to not have medical insurance in California.

But even if Isabella didn't know this, the hospital would inform her of it! Hospitals have entire staff departments dedicated to getting people to pay their bills, and part of that is helping people sign up for insurance! I know this from personal experience. Literally the next words out of that doctor's mouth should have been, "You don't have insurance? We have someone who can help you sign up for Medi-Cal."

Whoever wrote this script is naive and apparently has never actually been poor enough to need public health insurance. Or they just want both Isabella and Gael and the hospital to look extremely negligent and lazy. (They should have been looking into this by now with a baby on the way and anyone with half a brain can find all of the information I've written here through a basic internet search.)
