Towns and cities would be an update to the quality of life and intelligence of villagers. After spending 11 years around Steve and Alex they've finally started picking up more useful skills than the Village and Pillage update introduced.
If a village accuires more than 100 villagers it begins upgrading to a town. At 500 a City. Towns are built using more Clays and Stones, and Cities more Iron and Redstone items
Introduces four new villager types: planners, collectors, builders, and guards. Planners spawn at each of the marked villager maximum intervals and mark out where new buildings will go and any changes that will be made to old buildings with Frame blocks.
Collectors have an inventory akin to the player's, which they fill up with necessary materials found in the local area (spanning about 500 blocks in each direction from the village) which they drop of at the new "Jobsite" block. (you can actually donate materials to the collectors to speed up the construction)
Builders come next in that they take the materials from the jobsite block and actually build the new buildings in real time. They work from sunrise to sunset five of every seven days until the city is finished.
And finally the guards. Spawning in groups of 2 to every 1 collector, their role is pretty simple: they accompany the collector on their journeys and guard them from any hostile mobs. They're decked out in leather armor and wooden swords during the first upgrade, but move on to iron armor and swords and a shield for the second.
On the small chance that a city reaches 1000 villagers, it will go through the final upgrade into a Kingdom. Large walls and defences will be built, the builders will start building Iron Golems as well, and there will be a castle containing a new Throne block, which will seat a fifth new villager type: the monarch. Kingdoms can spawn in one of a few ruling types.
Trade kingdoms that prioritize shipping goods to nearby villages and towns.
Enchanted Kingdoms built using the new blocks and features from the previous update: "Source of Sorcery", that prioritize learning even more kinds of magic. Small chance one of these will spawn a nether portal
Warlike kingdoms that prioritize heavy defenses and ensuring no attacks, spawning battalions of 10 diamond-armored guards accompanied by two Iron Golems and sending them to seek and destroy Pillager outposts.
Speaking of the pillagers, they've been upgrading as well. While no new blocks or soldier types have been added, the outposts now have a chance of spawning as regular towers or larger Fortresses if within 5000 blocks of a Kingdom.
Can now store books in bookshelves
Can now place enchanted books and maps on Lecterns
Placing a banner on a shield no longer skews the pixel design.
Adds "lamp oil" item that can light and extingush lanterns
Chance pillager outposts will spawn directly above end portal dungeon, chance End cities will be populated by pillagers.
Placing a "navigation console" (crafted with an empty locator map, a compass, one Lapis Lazuli, and six Iron ingots) will allow any attatched blocks to act as a vessel.
Carriage can be crafted with a boat and a minecart Can attatch saddled Horses to Carriages with Lead or Chain to move around up to 8 blocks or 2 passengers.
Villagers can now be directed with "town commander" item, crafted with one Arrow and one Lapis Lazuli. Villagers in command mode will be distinguished by a blue particle effect similar to potion swirls
Can upgrade helmets with torches or lanterns to create miner's helmets
Can attatch Elytra to Chestplates, alongside putting Fireworks on boots so you don't have to keep right-clicking to fly.
