Obviously the actual sales figures don't matter, but the immediate cultural impact of any music is going to be directly related to how many people listen to it. Sales do matter when talking about how much the music is actually part of the cultural moment
Edit In case I wasn't clear enough: I am talking about IMMEDIATE cultural impact, not the overall cultural legacy the album will have in the future
