My absolute favourite scene is one I dont see talked about ever. In the novel where Mammy decides to go home to Tara and she talks about Ellen telling her her work is done and she needs to come home and rest.
It always breaks my heart because I know this is the point of no return. Everytime I read the novel I hope for Scarlett to change her actions, tell Rhett she loves him. Once I get to this part I know the tragic ending I always dread is only a chapter or two away. I know that sounds silly, I was born in 1989 and the ending was sealed more than 50 years before I was born but I always hope it will for some reason during this read through end differently.
The audiobook reading from Linda Stephens really elevates this part, the way she performs Rhett saying "Hush, you fool!" When Scarlett begs Mammy to stay breaks me and I always cry. Especially when Rhett says "Why would anyone want to stay here?".
What is your favourtie scene that chokes you up that no one ever talks about? There are so many heartbreaking scenes in the novel I feel dont ever get spoken about.
