The Book of Forgotten Futures

This is a mini-script-writing-project and a collaboration between myself and the incredibly skilled u/bettylaflame. Script links follow the brief prologue below.

Lot 333 - The Book of Forgotten Futures

Physical Description - Royal Octavo (10" by 6¼”) volume bound in tanned leather. Purported to be a unique specimen of anthropodermic bibliopathy. Significant wear on cover. Pages in good condition. No title on spine or cover.

Consists of hand written fictional narratives by multiple authors. Each narrative appears to be good examples of early weird horror stories. The book’s make dates it to the 17th century, however many stories purport to take place in the 18th, 19th, 20th, and even 21st centuries. Whether these stories are speculative fiction, or the work of a contemporary author is unknown. Due to its distinct read binding and unusual name, the historical record of this book has been well documented. Any lapses in dates or geographical periods indicate a period of unknown ownership.

The earliest known owners were unnamed witch hunters in the New England colonies as the Salem Witch Trials came to a close. Ownership then passed to the Reverend Cotton Mather, noted Puritan writer. The book was then likely stolen by William Coward, a captured pirate that the Reverend had ministered to and attempted to convert. It next appeared in the private library of Donatien Alphonse François (aka “The Marquis de Sade”) who was known to read stories from it at his infamous parties. The French government siezed the book after the Marquis’ death, and maintained possession of it until the Nazi occupation in 1940--after which it disappears from the records. In 1976, it was put up for auction as part of the estate of an anonymous private collector of rare books. The donor’s heirs wished to ensure the volume was returned to its country of origin.

Note: Apocryphal folklore insists that each story is true, even if it takes place in a fictional “future” and contains methods for contacting or summoning “gods” unknown to current scholars.

Auction records indicate that the book sold for $2.9 million dollars to an anonymous purchaser.
