Does anyone (romhackers?) know how speech is generated in Golden Sun?

I have raw speech SFX which you can tell are edited in some way to comprise dialog, but all they are are short blurbs. Somehow the game uses these files to generate speech sounds of varying time and rhythm, and I'd like to recreate this sound, but I don't know/can't figure out how these single grunts are edited into cadence. Anyone?
