I will use marijuana and gay marriage legalization. Both fought/are fighting for being sanctioned by the state. Now there is a bit of an issue with this. While in either case free people should not be molested or arrested for engaging in peaceful activity, it seems like the problem is in order to stop people from being arrested or enjoined from doing what they please. But the problem is the state sanctioning an activity, which seems bitter sweet (decriminalization for many victimless crims seems off the table so should we keep it illegal?).
As an added problem, people (looking at you Mr. Jones from Texas) talk about the government making things legal to dumb down the populace or to further government consolidation. It does seem like the only reason many vices are legalized are for the tax dollars and to keep people stupid, else why is prostitution still illegal? So sometimes while I think people should be free, I do worry there are ulterior motives for "legalizing" vs decriminalization. Any thoughts?
