I am a 28 year old single male from the US currently in NYC. I studied abroad in Madrid in 2016 and it was the greatest experience of my life. I absolutely fell in love with the Spanish culture and people.
Iāve never been fully satisfied in the US, as I donāt like the individualistic and āpeachā culture, among many, many other aspects.
Iām considering finding a job in consulting in Madrid (I donāt speak fluent Spanish, so it would have to be mainly in English) and moving there permanently. I donāt want to just go for a couple of years for the āexperienceā because Iāve already done that and at this stage in my life I only want to do things that are part of my long term plan.
The main reasons for my apprehension are:
Fitting in: Spaniards tend to have their own groups of friends since they were in school, and are less open to newcomers
Work/salary: is working in Spain even possible without speaking fluent Spanish? I asked a Spanish colleague (I work at a global company) and he said that 60% of his work projects were in English due to international clients. Will I be able to build wealth and live well on a ~ 35-40k euro salary in Madrid?
Like most Americans, Iāve always dreamt of making it ābigā and becoming a multimillionaire. Obviously, this will be much, much more difficult to do Spain, if not impossible. Iāll have to let go of this dream in order to fulfill my life of living in Spain.
What should I do?
