Having finished Ragnarök in a frenzy I can best compare to a cat unlocking the mechanism that pours out its food, I have now maxed out the entire experience. I adored it. The story, the gameplay, and the theme were all so wonderful for this once-doomed series.
Yeah, you kids prob don’t even know the eye-rolling sigh a fan did every time a new game was released. For god's sake, one of the spin-offs takes place between the cutscenes of the first game!
That said, Santa Monica has restored my faith in this series, and there is definitely a future for it. I hope however they won’t produce them too often, and that too, not as prequels. Let’s continue to a new realm and explorer deeper and feeler feelings. The north has been explored just enough imo.
So, Egypt.
Egypt is a perfect setting for the franchise and has long been conceptualized by developers and fans alike. Mummies, pyramids, and of course gods with animal faces.
Thinking through how the game would play, I have listed a number of talking points below of what I believe can happen in the game.
I am in no way predicting the games with any certainty. Literally, every fan theory I've ever had has been wrong except the Ikea SCP. So this really is just an exercise in concepts and ideas, and how I think it could gel into the second game.
Leaving the north.
As per the prophecy, and the fact that the canon ending of the game is finishing every side quest (Yes, get them flowers), Kratos will be living a peaceful life as the protector of the 8, formerly 9, realms. So there really is no need to leave the north for Egypt unless an inciting incident (not a mystery box, shh J.J Abrams) occurs.
Some outside force must motivate him to leave for Egypt and that must be Atreus. Atreus leaves to find his people, and Kratos would not need to leave unless he was called for. Perhaps he receives word of Atreus being in trouble via Angrboda or Fenrir? Maybe we get a cool boss opening with some sort of Egyptian assassin who comes for Kratos and he realizes during the fight it was connected to Atreus. Either way, Kratos is forced to leave to find his son. But leaving comes at a price….
Kratos consults Mimir, who has since become the new ruler of Helheim. Now I love Mimir and Kratos being bros, but we kinda tapped the well. Post ragnarök Mimir mentions Hräsvelg wished to retire, and frankly, Mimir would be an excellent replacement. As the smartest man alive he could easily identify and hear stories from the dead. Also since he is not really alive or dead, he is kinda the best in-between. I find the idea funny of Kratos arriving in Helheim and very dramatically Mimir’s massive head peers through the sky all
“Oh! Brother! Were you due a visit today?”
But I guess Ty’r could be fine as well… I guess!
Anyways, Mimir lists to Kratos that the assassin was Egyptian and finding Atreus would require him to travel with semi-hostile sailors who do not care for stowaways with weapons. This could be the game's way of explaining why you have no gear or XP. Let’s face it, you would be too OP starting a game with 3 god-killing weapons. That said, Ragnarök just gives you 2 at the start so what do I know?
Before leaving Kratos instructs Freya to protect the realms, she and the Valkyries are needed to ensure any other assassins would be stopped. This would be why he journeys alone.
When leaving I think it would be nice if a massive parade and gathering occurs as Kratos sails off. He is their beloved protector. He is adored and I can see him maybe faintly smiling and waving them goodbye. Sad boy Kratos is done, for now…
Egypt and Greece.
When arriving in Egypt a number of Game stuff gotta happen. We need vendors, weapons, and new side characters. No idea of any of these things tho, but hopefully they’re neat. However, we can explore a couple of interesting themes. I got the feeling Kratos was melancholy over his homeland in Ragnarök, so arriving in Egypt might stir up old memories. The warmth, the olives, and the culture would all hit home for him. This is not too far off mind you. In the ancient world, Greece and Egypt were very aware of each other and shared many similar talking points.
However, in Egypt, I think we can find an even stronger link to Greece.
After the destruction of the Greek Pantheon, I think many Greeks migrated to Egypt. They fear and despise Kratos, to them he is their Devil. So we can get a neat juxtaposition of Kratos being Loved only for him to be reviled again for his past. Finally, people can call him out on what he did, they are rightfully angry and we can explore themes of Redemption and past mistakes.
I can totally see Kratos trying to make a point that he has changed but it just isn’t good enough.
Since we end Ragnarök with Kratos feeling hope and optimism, I see Kratos being actually confronted with his past, not just hiding or not talking about it, is the only real place to go with his character.
Kratos’ journey, however, is to find Atreus and why Egypt is connected to the giants. We can maybe get some cool clues and leads about where he is and get an idea of his situation.
Now, I'm no expert on Egyptian mythology at all, unless it was printed on a YuGiOh card. So who or what he fights there I got no idea, you tell me.
But maybe we can draw from history to get what’s going on in Egypt…
Slavery
Egypt is arguably one of the most famous slave states in the ancient world, so perhaps they are in God of War as well?
I think that the only reason Atreus would be in Egypt is to find the Giants, and if he were to go to war with the Egyptians it would have to be over the giants. So, the Egyptian gods would had to have enslaved the Giants. Can you think of a better group of workers than giants? Literal giants could build massive constructions and normal-sized ones could be servants in households. Every crop, building, and object is made of their forced labour.
Atreus is justly leading a resistance.
Also, Spartans were famously slavers, so maybe Kratos has another added layer of guilt. Maybe when he does reunite with Atreus they have a falling out about that.
Family
Reuniting with Atreus is the main goal of the game, so finding him has to be a challenging task. Is he imprisoned? or in hiding? What exactly has he done in the name of freedom? Perhaps Kratos sees warning signs of his coming fall from grace.
I'm also toying with the idea of a granddad Kratos thing, but it is a tad cliche. Maybe you can figure out a neat way to do that? Would be cool if the payer got a "Aww, he is just like Atreus at that age".
Sindri and Athena
Two loose ends that could be explored in Egypt.
Athena's presence in God of war 2018 was brief but interesting, and Sindri's unforgiving anger to end Ragnarök is an excellent thematic conclusion.
These two characters represent the past. Athena is Kratos' greatest representation of his past, and Sindri is atreus' greatest regret.
These two characters have both been seen traveling between realms, and being in Egypt is not too far off. I do see them as being central to the plot. Father and son need to confront them both, respectively.
Athena must be kratos' way to end his guilt, and maybe finishing her will motivate him to save the Stateless greeks.
Sindri will need to be "fixed" basically. Atreus shows his love and that there is still a family for him, not wanting to create a cycle of vengeance. I suspect that can be poignant of Atreus' own feelings towards his rebellion and showing he is a better man than Kratos.
I don't know however how they'll be added in. Athena can maybe be the Goddess of the hostile Greeks, maybe even offered a place on the Egyptian pantheon so they can control the Greek Refugees.
Sindri I cannot see becoming violent enough to seek vengeance. Angry yes, Killer and conspiracist? ehhh.. Time changes a person with such grief, but maybe there is a better excuse for him trying to work against Atreus than just "I'm angrier now!"
So with that essay of ideas, I'd love to hear your thoughts and what you think could and could not work. I really do love feedback adn hope to see other, and better, ideas of your own.
Time to post, touch grass, and watch my karma drop tho.
Cheers
