So, I am finally watching The Offer, which I am sure has been posted about several times here in the past since it has been around for a couple of years. I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought, and it has sent me down some rabbit holes. But if you don't know about Bob Evans, the head of Paramount at the time, that guy was a wild man. He started as an actor, then moved to production, then became head of Paramount while in his 30s. He oversaw The Godfather and other movie hits in the 70s, married and then divorced Ali McGraw 3 years later while The Godfather was in production and she cheated on him with Steve McQueen, got busted for trafficking cocaine in 1980, produced muliple trashy erotic thrillers in the 1990s, it goes on. Somehow, through his independent production company, he kept ties with Paramount all the way until the year of his death in 2019 when he was 89 years old.
In the show it projects a semi-animosity with Francis Ford Coppola, but Evans ended up calling Coppola in again to direct another Mario Puzo story -- The Cotton Club in 1984. Coppola came in when Robert Altman ended up off the project following the box office disaster that was the live action Popeye movie with Robin Williams. And the craziness between Evans & Coppola apparently continued.
Really, it makes me want to watch a good biopic of Bob Evans. And another of Francis Ford Coppola.
Btw, here's the Wikipedia page for Evans for the lazy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Evans
