So what's the point of online?

Just picked this game up for the switch and my friends did to. I know I'm not very far end of rank 3 but I haven't seen any random online play? Except assault mode but I think I just played with bots. So my question is does the online play get better at higher ranks or is it just going to be me and my friends. I really like playing with random people like in MHGU and Dauntless.
Also note this is not a deal breaker this game is fun as heck.
