I’m in need of some inspiration, because this is the most disillusioned I’ve ever been as a Nets fan. I dealt with 12-70 because we were on the heels of some special and fun seasons. I suffered through KG and Pierce because it was nice to see management gunning for a title again. But I just don’t know what I’m rooting for anymore.
I feel no connection to this team. It’s a hodgepodge of guys who don’t fit and who didn’t choose to be here (and who don’t particularly seem to like it). We have no identity, in our culture or play. And now I’m questioning: why root for a team at all? Because I’m from the area? Because I always have? Because the team has a player I like? You cheer for bands because you like their music. Why do you cheer for a team?
For me: Stephon Marbury was the first player who got me into basketball, and I grew up in NJ and loved everything from the grey jerseys to Sly. Then Kidd arrived and elevated our play. Then Carter (my all-time favorite Net) got here and we were a blast to watch. During our downturn I still felt hopeful, and always loved Brook Lopez and his positivity. As a New Jersey kid, I felt proud watching us every night, even when things got tough.
Now I’m just feeling embarrassed. We moved to Brooklyn for more money. Signed stars and couldn’t keep them. Now who even knows where we’ll be in a year. I feel completely lost and apathetic as a fan, and I’ve never felt this way about the only sports team I’ve ever cared about.
I need to feel something about this organization again, besides shame and exhaustion, so I’ll take all the help I can get. Why are you a Nets fan?
