First retirement after ~20 scenarios, Envelope X/Town Records questions (SPOILERS)

Post Body

So we finally managed to retire a character after playing through 20 scenarios, and our first completed Personal Quest was Vengeance, which opened Envelope X.

We play on Tabletop Simulator. The mod we're playing with had three things inside Envelope X:

  1. A key for decoding alphanumerical glyphs
  2. A coded message, which we decoded using the key. This yielded a cryptic message about 10 clues we have to find, but nothing else. I'm assuming this has no gameplay effect (yet?)
  3. Another envelope labeled X, which says "BIG SPOILER" - I'm assuming this is the reward for solving the riddle above, and we're NOT supposed to open yet, correct?

Beyond that, we also unlocked the Town Records book. It says to document the retired character - is there a mechanical reason for doing so (characters coming back in some form) or is it purely for flavor?

Additionally, we read through the Town Records book. We reached Prosperity 4 before getting our first retirement, so we read all the way to page 11, which told us to unlock Oozing Grove. Once we complete Oozing Grove, do we immediately resume reading through the book, or do we need to retire another character before we get to read more? The text seemed to imply you should only proceed with reading a section as part of retiring a character.
