Kongsberg Gruppen is the primary defense company for Norway, and they currently operate several divisions: Kongsberg Defence Systems, Kongsberg Maritime, and Kongsberg Digital. As Norway looks to expand Kongsberg Gruppen to be similar to our Swedish counterparts at Saab AB, Kongsberg will be expanded with two new divisions: Kongsberg Aerospace Systems and Kongsberg Ground Defense Systems.
Kongsberg Aerospace Systems
The idea behind Kongsberg Aerospace Systems is to break out the aerospace portion of KDS, and have it become more focused. We would like to partner with Antonov in order to build and develop several planes, potentially introducing them not only to Europe, but also to a greater audience around the world. Specifically we are targeting the An-70T-100, An-77, An-112KC, An-132, An-148-100E, An-148-200, An-148-300, An-148DRLV, An-158, An-170, An-178, and An-188. This would allow KAS to enter the aerospace market without new R&D. We would like to work closely with Antonov as we deliver competition to the current market dominated by Embraer, Airbus, and Boeing.
The facilities under KDS that were allocated for F-35 production will remain, but be re-organized under KAS for better management. We do not expect to be building fighter jets in the entirety, but we believe it would behoove us to continue building critical components on the planes, as well as having the knowledge on how to maintain the planes in our inventory. With our participation in the European Joint Fighter Program, having KAS be focused on Norway's participation in the project is critical.
Kongsberg Ground Defense Systems
KGDS is an expansion of the ownership that we have over several ground unit productions. Already we have renamed the Norwegian variants of Patria vehicles to hold the Kongsberg name, and we would like to confirm our intentions with KGDS. We would like to develop further upon these platforms while also looking to build or modify new systems. With recent procurements, we are likely more focused on the upgrading of our current systems, however we would like to confirm the purchase of 100 K2 Black Panther. This will have us achieve our replacement tank platform and we hope to build these on license within Norway. These K2's will be named Stridsvogn 1N, and will be the prime example of the newer, stronger Norwegian Army.
We will also look towards KGDS for the procurement programs for the Kongsberg Tankbil, Ulv, Antiluftsystem, and Pasi. As we look to improve these systems, we hope to continue to develop cutting edge technology. More factories will be constructed in order to shift the production facilities from Poland to Norway.
