Gandantegchinlen Monastery, Ulaanbaatar

June 14th, 2028

On March 1st, 2012, Jampal Namdol Chökyi Gyaltsen, the 9th Jebtsundamba Khutughtu passed away aged 79 in Ulaanbaatar. He was the last spiritual head of Mongolia, yet only lived there for a year in 2011 due to the communist regime that ruled Mongolia until 1990. Since then, the position of Jebtsundamba Khutughtu has been vacant for almost 20 years. In 2016, the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso expressed his belief that the 10th has been born. That was 12 years ago, and the position has continued to be empty, yet another effect that remains from the communist regime that brutally suppressed Buddhism in Mongolia, destroying countless monasteries and murdering thousands of monks. Following the 1990 revolution which overthrew the Mongolian People's Republic, Buddhism in Mongolia has begun to heal, and by the current date of 2028, roughly 57% of the population reported themselves as Buddhists in national polling.

However, on June 14th, 2028, Mongolian Buddhist monks, after roughly two years of searching have declared that a 10th head of the Gelug lineage of Tibetan Buddhism; her being a 6 year old girl from Arkhanghai Province (ᠠᠷᠤᠬᠠᠩᠭ᠋ᠠᠢ ᠠᠶᠢᠮᠠᠭ). She has passed there three tests proving her to be the reincarnation of the Jebtsundamba Khutughtu, proving that the Dalai Lama was close to being correct, being off by only 8 years. The young woman, Toghemur Altani, is the first to be installed since 1936. 38 years after the 1990 revolution which overthrew the communist regime which murdered thousands and almost destroyed Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia, a new spiritual leader has been found as religion in Mongolia continues to heal, with a general interest in religion growing among the population.
