MONGOLIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, BIOTECHNOLOGY SCHOOL
1/05/26
Following several years of work, the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST, for short), has finished sequencing the genome of the extinct Tarpan horse, and the team's project is now able to move onto the next stage of reviving the 116 years dead species. Simply acquiring the Tarpan's genome sequence was a large task, but with it now accomplished by the Mongolian scientists with assistance from the Russians and British, the Tarpan Project can now continue to further steps, hoping to complete it by the end of the decade. Additionally, MUST researchers invite Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) scientists from China to work on the project in Mongolia.
Following this accomplishment MUST have opened an international exhibition discussing the Tarpan, the science of cloning, and what the future has in store for cloning projects, such as reviving the Dodo, or potentially using this technology to prevent the extinction of critically at-risk/extinct species in the wild. The research done in Ulaanbaatar could prove a breakthrough in cloning and may pave the way for international projects regarding special cloning. While there is much to celebrate at MUST, it will still take time for the project to be complete when the first Tarpan is born after 116 years of extinction.
