Laboratory of Quantum Information Theory -
Московский Физико-Технический институт (Физтех)
With the announcement that both commercially viable quantum technology is on the doorstep, and that it would be at least another two years until it is released to the market, the people of the Union State, and indeed the world, had a range of reactions to what is one of the most important technological developments in recent history.
In Moscow, students are hosting “quantum parties” and heralding a new world of technological advancement. Developers have grasped the image of the “Quantum Generation” and the modes of construction are finding retro-futurism the most appealing design style. “Where once was the atom, now is quantum” was the slogan of one interior design company, referencing the postwar belief that atomic energy would change everything.
The rise retro futurism as an art style also served as a rejection of minimalism and “the plague of modernism.” Bubble Comics released a new comic series about “Captain Quantum” a Superman-esque lab technician that harnesses quantum energy to fight crime and supervillains. Tourism to “Star City” has increased by 20% since the last year, with the local government sponsoring renovation campaigns in the area and the construction of new monuments to the star heroes of the Soviet past.
Enrollment in STEM programs in the Union State have increased with a desire for people to get degrees in quantum computing and be on the frontline of a new industry that will develop into a multi-trillion dollar one once it is released to markets. A group known as “Businessmen for a Quantum Future” have petitioned the Soyuzi government to subsidize a new “Diamond Valley” for new Quantum and high tech industries, a play on California’s Silicon Valley, where the Diamonds that were fundamental to the progress of the quantum technology takes the position in nomenclature of the silicon of MOS transistors.
The rise of the communists in the recent elections also corresponded with a movement to use quantum energy for public welfare; petitions to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, and other local administration to prioritize the purchase of quantum computers for universities and schooling, the suggestion of municipal public quantum computers at libraries, and the research of medical applications of quantum computers.
A slew of investors has travelled to Moscow from Japan, China, South Korea, the United States, and the European Union, all clamoring to get their foot in the door as the technology progresses. The air in tech savvy portions of the civilization is electric.
However, this is not without drawbacks, as not all the developments of the quantum technology have been met favorably. A split has developed in the Orthodox Church, between a modernizing faction that sees Orthodoxy as both science and religion and believes that Orthodoxy must place itself at the forefront of development as that is its historic position in the countries that follow the faith. Led by Pavel the Metropolitan of Minsk, this faction cites the Orthodox Church’s role in early medicine in the Byzantine Empire where the Catholic West rejected new practices as evidence of the church’s role. The other faction rejects quantum theory and is led by Bishop Mitrophan of Severomorsk and Umbsk. It has branded the quantum technology pagan and issued an anathema against what it describes as “the atheism of science.” The importance of chance to quantum theory, they argue, directly undermines the determinism of the faith – where is God is not a game of chance. Much of this debate has occurred in the Holy Synod and the theological ivory towers of the faith, but they carry important implications, especially as Patriarch Kiril turns 81 and questions of his succession are raised.
Among atheist youth, the idea of “quantum metaphysics or mysticism” is on the rise, filling a similar role to what astrology and faux-Buddhism do in western young folk. They view quantum theory as an explanation of parapsychology and believe in the existence of multiverse theory as an unreachable facet of being. The quantum suicide and quantum immortality thought experiments are popular among these segments of society, and syncretize Buddhist ideas of enlightenment and nirvana with their belief in quantum mysticism – the multiverse is the ultimate plane of human understanding, and accessing that multiverse is Nirvana.
LVIVMISiS is to make a final announcement about how far their research has come by the end of this year.
