Designed to replace the Type 053 derivatives, the Type 054B is based on the same common hull of Type 054 and Type 054A classes, with improved sensors and a standardized armament in 32x 9m CN-VLS, which allow for capability upgrades cheaply and rapidly. Intended to be able able to be small and cheap to be procured in mass numbers to relief the higher end combatants of its duty, the Type 054B is perfect for projecting power through numbers in patrol across the first and second island chains and through the Indian Ocean. Costing $450 million per unit, a total of 34 will be procured.
