The Project 17B (Vindhyagiri-class) frigate is a follow-on of the Project 17A frigates for the Indian Navy. A total of nine ships will be built at Mazagon Dock and GRSE. The construction of the first ship will start in 2022 as the first P17As are entering service, and the first ship is expected to deliver by 2026. The anticipated cost for each vessel is $800 million. The vessel will incorporate the latest stealth features. The experience gained in designing the Project 17A will be applied to Project 17B. This class will improve upon the earlier class in terms of stealth. They will have covered mooring deck and the number of antennae on the ship will be reduced by using AMF-STAR AESA radar. The P17B will also feature better roll stabilization and a discreet visual profile. 20% larger in volume, the P17B will serve as the primary heavy surface combatant patrol for the Indian Navy, capable of operating on long distances for an extended period of time alone. The P17B shares a similar hull to the P-17A, however slightly stretched, facilitating a better length to beam ratio, as well as 2 multi-mission boat bays. The P17B also facilitates an 800-ton upgrade margin, with systems such as a laser CIWS earmarked for future integration.
