With the power-grabbing actions of Lê Hồng Anh and the emergence of Le Cong Dinh as an opposition candidate, the Communist Party has struggled to keep their heads together. As such they've decided to convene a meeting of the higher party officials to discuss their course of action.
The question of whether they should present a candidate of their own to compete with Lê Hồng Anh and Le Cong Dinh or not divides those present. It's stated that not presenting a CP candidate could open up the opportunity of presenting Lê Hồng Anh as a reformist CP candidate, confirming him as a progressive yet overall stability-minded President and maintaining the prestige of the Communist Party as the leading force in the country. At the same time, the sizable opposition movement, albeit disunited, could use such a situation to rally all disgruntled members of Vietnamese society behind Le Cong Dinh's candidacy, severely threatening the stability of the nation and the power of the Communist Party.
On the other hand, presenting a Communist candidate could divide the opposition and reformist movement between Lê Hồng Anh and Le Cong Dinh, possibly granting the CP a winning share of votes, but at the same time undermining their authority - although that's unavoidable at this point anyway. In this situation a loss in the elections would however be disastrous for the Communist Party, with either Lê Hồng Anh or Le Cong Dinh claiming superior authority by the will of the people, and as such several members present at the meeting advise to analyze the apparent success rates of both opposition candidates so far to determine whether presenting a CP candidate is a risk worth taking.
Those more courageous then slowly direct the meeting towards discussing Lê Hồng Anh's reform plans and those already implemented - while it's generally agreed upon that the President is engaging in moves to grab more power for his position as well as his person, the younger members also urge the rest to consider the President's ideas as legitimate plans. If the Communist Party were to hijack the reformist movement's plans and implemented them with the CP's interests in mind, they could produce a victory for both the Party's power in Vietnam as well as Vietnam itself. They say a few favourable words about the idea to remove the references to the Communist Party from the constitution as well, praising it as a means to greater dialogue between different groups and achieving contempt within the population.
It is yet unclear how much the younger generation's ideas manage to gain ground in the heads of the older, entrenched crew. It's however obvious that measures against the corruption and backroom deals that are loved by this old guard will not go by them swimmingly. The Communist Party may very well turn on these compromise-minded members in a move to alienate the reformists, creating 2 great lairs in addition to the full-scale opposition movement behind Le Cong Dinh. It will be down to the Party's leadership to vote on which road to take after deliberation with the help of statistics and predictions.
One thing is clear - the Communist Party must move swiftly if it seeks to maintain some degree of control over the situation unfolding in Vietnam.
