Outside the Saudi Consulate, Konaklar Mahallesi ÇAMLIK CAD, Akasyalı Sk. No:6, 34330 Beşiktaş, Istanbul
In a move which has thrown Istanbul youth culture and social media into somewhat of a spin, an avant-garde artist has acted in the night with remarkable efficiency.
The signposts signifying the street, jn which the Saudi Embassy is located, were all coordinatedly re painted, and replaced, with signs reading "Khashoggi Street. It is a big street, and there are lots of signs. It is so far not completely apparent how the efforts were coordinated, and by whom, but first-hand reports do point to younger people, men and women, carrying signboards around in the night.
No arrests have been made, though the district is awash with activity as people travel from all over to be photographed with the signs. They really do look authentic.
Khashoggis resurfacing as something of a symbol, follows disquiet that surfaced when Turkey made the unpopular move to end their involvement in further trials and convictions related to the death. On 7 April 2022, a Turkish court ordered the transfer of the trial to Saudi Arabia, despite the fact that many of the suspects had already been acquitted in Saudi Arabia. The decision was criticized by human rights advocates and lawyers involved in the case.
The streets, it seems, have not forgotten, and a few protestors in Khashoggi Street, wearing costumes of crude Saudi garb, and brandishing plastic bonesaws, are now viral on social media.
Istanbul authorities have said that they will conduct a full investigation and take the signs down.
