I’m posting this due to a resurgence of popularity in this scam for some reason, leading to several people I know falling for it
The method I’m talking about is quickswitching, but in a different manner from what most of you are used to. It’s often done with items with same or similar icons, such as a Gamma doppler Bayonet and a Bayonet Emerald, or a 90/10 Kara Fade and a 70/30 Kara Fade, and so on.
So what happens is that a scammer obtains two knives. Let’s pretend a scammer has a 90/10 Kara Fade and a 70/30 Kara Fade, where the 90/10 is worth more than 350 keys and the 70/30 about 185. They have identical icons in trade windows. What happens is that the scammer lists their 70/30 on the scm for a ridiculous price (So it won’t be sold) and offers their 90/10 kara fade to others. Now, someone checks their inventory and is like, oh it’s a 90/10 Kara Fade, and due to the trade lock, he definitely can’t quickswitch me since he would have to wait 8 days to trade if he switched it for a 70/30 fade or something. The issue is that SCM does not incur a trade lock, so once the person agrees to the trade, the scammer unlists the 70/30 off the scm and lists their 90/10 on the scm, and proceeds to sell the 70/30 fade at the price of a 90/10, where they would then be able to buy another 70/30 for about 185 keys and profit about 165 keys and continuously do this
The trade hold causes this method to be more legitimate/believable because people believe that the existence of the trade hold makes it impossible for someone to swap an item in their inventory with another item without the other item becoming untradable.
TLDR: check your items repeatedly please, regardless of how many times you’ve checked them. Even in the trade window or trade offer window, even if you’ve previously repeatedly checked it. Please don’t get scammed.
