Valve and WESA - What can be done?
Post Body

So, seeing as Valve develops and maintains the game, people think "If the WESA gets out of control, blocking teams from participating in other leagues or anything like that, Valve can just shut it down." Well, the only problem with that is they really can't. How would Valve stop it? Yeah, they could ask them not to take over the pro scene. If they don't, they could MAYBE attempt to take it to court, depending on the situation. But, let's face it. Valve is powerless when it comes to the WESA.

How? Well, let's look at what we know. WESA is an "organization" of sorts of the top European teams. If they were to overstep their boundaries, banning teams from playing any other leagues/tournaments than ESL or maybe Dreamhack, the community would be outraged, calling on Valve or someone in the community to do something. As for Valve, they obviously can't ban the WESA players. They didn't do anything wrong, and don't deserve a punishment. If Valve banned the players until they're allowed to play in other tournaments, you'd see more harm than before, as some of these pros might try for an early retirement, as well as more community backlash. Valve could also stop hosting Majors with ESL or Dreamhack (if they're also only allowed to play Dreamhack leagues), but again, you're punishing the players by not allowing them to compete in Majors. Like I said before, Valve could try to sue MTG, the parent company of ESL and WESA, but it would really be a lost cause. It's not like a giant multinational corporation going up against a mom-and-pop story. These are 2 huge companies with massive teams of lawyers. Valve really won't have much to go on, so they will likely lose unless something seriously changes and there are very clear violations of Valve's rights. Now, I'm not a lawyer with years and years of experience, so don't come back on me and complain if I said something wrong. This is just common sense and my general understanding of the law, not deep, through understanding of every loophole and small violation in the book.

So, as you can see, the WESA, though not doing anything extremely wrong yet, is a massive issue. Even right now, it's like a tumor that's past the point of operation. They kept this all hushy hush until last Friday, and did who knows what to the guy who leaked the poster*.

*I know they said in their AMA thing that he quit, but that's the oldest excuse for "he was fired and we want nothing to do with him ever again."
