After completing a bunch of Overwatch sessions, I've noticed the amount of people reporting innocent players who get 1-2 good shots/rounds. I've decided to make this guide to help the community understand who to report, and who not to report.
Firstly, I'll answer a few common questions about the report system and Overwatch in general.
Q. Should I report just to be safe?
A. No. Reporting another player "just to be safe" wastes time for Overwatch investigators. This time could be used to take actual hackers and griefers out of the game.
Q. Should I report a smurf?
A. Only if that smurf is extremely obviously hacking or griefing. Just because they are doing better than you doesn't always mean they're hacking.
Q. What about derankers?
A. Deranking, even in 5-man queues, is still considered griefing. Think of it like this: 1 of them doesn't want to play, so they queue up anyway. Now it goes from a 5-man derank lobby to a 4-man derank queue and a solo-queue player who has griefers on their team.
Q. How do I get Overwatch so I can help?
A. You have to be at least Gold Nova, and have around 150 wins. This could change for anyone, however.
Now, onto the actual guide.
When you suspect a player is hacking, they might not be. Things to look for in possible hackers are: constant wallbang headshots without knowledge you were there (no visuals, sound, spotted grenades/guns), 100% headshot ratio (never missing the head, even when jumping/falling), constant perfect bhopping (non-stop, perfect bhops, increasing velocity with every single hop), and, though rare, conformation from NON-QUEUED, NON-SARCASTIC teammates ("This guy is actually walling. Sorry guys.") or ("We want to kick him, but his friend won't let us. Sorry :(").
If the player you suspect of hacking is not doing anything that would warrant a ban, i.e. he wallbangs you after you threw a flash from behind a box, he can see your gun sticking out, he got a few really good headshots, but isn't hitting a near-100% ratio, or is just a good player, they should NOT be reported. Instead of going into a match being weary of everyone, you should go in thinking they're only better than you until proven otherwise.
As for griefers. If they're AFK in spawn, teamkilling non-queued players constantly, being reported by their own teammates, or anything else that is obvious griefing, that is when a report should be filed. If they are in their spawn, AFK for 1 round while they let their dog out or similar, that is not griefing. They just have a life. If they are AFK in their spawn for 6 rounds, spinning in circles, that is a griefer. If they TK their friend 1 time, that's not griefing. If they are TKing random people, multiple times to lose a round, that is griefing. You shouldn't file reports on people who are not obviously griefing. Only if they are deliberately trying to lose the game.
So, please. Take this guide and stop reporting random people who are having good games. It helps the community, as well as saves time for players like you and me.
