Setup : I spend the majority of my day at my desk at home (I work from home) and certain things are always in approximately the same position so it is common for me to grab things without thinking/looking. In this case, my lighter is always kept on the RIGHT, about 2-3 inches from my trackball mouse.
Occurrence:
Last night, the only lighter I had died, and I had no replacements. I looked everywhere to see if I had one. Nope, so I ended up having to use the torch we use to light the oven.
Today, my g/f goes to the store and she picks me up a 5-pack. When she gets home, she places it on a little table I keep on my LEFT side.
A short time later I want a cigarette, and as I am working, I grab to my right as I normally would (not thinking) and pick up a lighter.
Get it to my face, when I realize:
I NEVER OPENED THE PACK.
I look at the pack, it is still on my left, unopened. Look at the lighter in my hand, and it is brand new AND the same model as the ones in the pack.
Somehow, I now have an unopened 5-pack and 1 single lighter.
G/F could not have put a 6th lighter on my right, as that side is up against a wall.
Desk I sit at most of time is faceing outwards towards the rest of the room. Have desk/wall behind me, wall to the right, small table on my left. There just isn't enough room as there is only a 1 1/2 foot spot on my left to get into my corner.
Mention to her, and she swears she only bought the 5-pack and in as perplexed as I am.
Edit: I never left my desk between the point where she put the lighters on my left and the lighter appeared on my right. For her to try and pull any tricks (which is not common for her, that's MY game), she would have had to get behind me, reach over my right arm, to put the lighter in place.
Edit 2: Left/right mix-up fixed
