Is anyone else frustrated with iQiyi's subtitling for GP999? (somewhat of a rant)

Post Body

For reference, I am watching the episodes within ~16 hours after their release (I know iQiyi goes and polishes up their subtitles - at least in terms of the subs' appearance - within a few days, but I don't think they actually bother to fix what they've translated as well). I don't think you have to be able to understand Korean/Chinese/Japanese to figure out that a lot of what is said and appears on screen in the show is mistranslated or omitted through translation just enough to convey a different meaning than the original but still be kinda ballpark the same idea. One example I can think of is in episode 2 where Yujin had one of her lines translated "The team was dismissed" (when talking about CLC). This surprised a lot of viewers because it really sounded like she straight-up said CLC disbanded, yet she actually said - this is me paraphrasing what other users have written on this sub - she meant that CLC would have no more group activities. Yes, that essentially implies that CLC is going to disband, but "The team was dismissed" sounds like they've already disbanded ... Kinda the same idea but also not really?

A second example - I know Chinese fairly well and this kind of translation error I am talking about comes up a lot when the Chinese girls speak - is around 24:33 on iQiyi's video, Su Ruiqi says what was translated as "I expected to rank 2nd" when what she said actually more closely means "I believe/think I should be that rank", which while the meanings are similar, these statements have different connotations as far as how bold/confident they sound. (She does start off saying a verb which can mean "expect" but she pauses and changes the verb.) At 24:52 Ruiqi also says, according to the sub, "She told me... highest score as well" when what Ruiqi said was more like "I heard her say" and not "She told me", which the difference is a bit irrelevant, but still a valid difference.

(There have also been a lot of comments/posts from users on this sub that are either confused about the voting/show rules or asking other users to translate what a trainee said because the English sub wasn't clear enough. What, then, is the purpose of having an official English sub if it can't even perform the basic duty that a subtitle is supposed to perform?)

Basically this is what I mean by mistranslated/omitted just enough to convey a different meaning but still be kinda similar to the original. For the Korean subs/speech I've noticed often times a trainee says a lot (or there is a lot of on-screen text) but the English subs have a four-word sentence like "She was very good"... which just doesn't seem right.

By all means I am very grateful to be able to watch the show with English subs and I know sometimes content can take 10x the video length in time spent just to translate, but with really poor translations I also feel that on some segments, what I'm watching is no different than if I were to watch the raw and just wing it with some inferencing based on what's going on in the video. Also since English-speaking voters overseas are able to vote this season, it's really pertinent that trainees aren't misunderstood to that population since we all know how one small thing that's portrayed differently can completely burn and crash someone's reputation. I just wish the subtitling team at iQiyi just took some extra time to give us at least decent translations instead of stuff that sounds very summarized and borderline inaccurate. Disregarding us viewers, I don't think these subs are doing the girls themselves justice either.

Unfortunately I don't know where else I can watch eps with English sub, as I just tried the Mnet YouTube link and the video has been privated anyways (such a shame since I think Mnet did a decent job with subtitling the teasers and girls' intro videos too).

A few other slightly related mentions: I know iQiyi did English sub for Youth With You before and I was told it was pretty bad but I never took a look myself. Maybe they are just awful at English subbing in general? Also when I watched the ep, at the beginning there was a message on the screen that said Chinese subs would be out later. I thought that was very funny for a Chinese company to be prioritizing providing content to a population that mostly doesn't speak their primary language, but maybe whatever contract they have with Mnet tells them to get English subs up ASAP anyways.

Sorry this turned kinda rant-ish. It was just something that'd been brewing in my mind for the last week or so based upon how the first episode's subs (and the 2nd episode's too I guess) looked.

TL;DR I think iQiyi's subs are not great quality and gave a couple examples of "bad subs", which is not a good situation for us viewers and the girls themselves, and I don't know where else I can watch with Eng subs (since Mnet's YouTube only works for premiere).
