Can I ask for help with Life Is Strange Episode 1

Hi there

I am stuck on episode 1 of Life is Strange. I dont know how to get Jess and her two friends out of the way so I (Max) can enter my dorm to pick up a pen drive for my friend that I am about to meet up with. I think her name is Jess anyway. I have tried turning up the water spinklers and tampering with the janitor's paint pot so it falls off the hook. Neither work. The game gets me to rewind everytime after the paint pot gets spilled. I can't see what other options I have. Am I allowed to ask for help? :)
