Limes or lemons or...

I usually drink my gin either as a g&t, gimlet, or with a few ice cubes and a squeezed lime wedge. Well today I ran our of limes and instead had to use a lemon with my gin which was an excellent substitute. It made me wonder why limes seem to be always used with gin and what else could be used to complement the flavor?
