What happened to Emily to make her like this?

Post Body
I just finished the series and I was waiting for some flashbacks to see Emily’s family or something to explain her ruthlessness. Since the writers didn’t give it to us, what do we think?

Precisely, she's also immersed in a life where she'll be ruthlessly judged and criticised for any perceived failing, doubly so when it comes to children as they were part of her "job". Emily in essence spends her life in a pit of vipers, and indeed I can only think of one or two times where she spoke about someone else with genuine sincerity (Sweety being an example). She doesn't have friends, she has no support and she knows it.
Not to mention she knew she was openly disliked and derided by her mother in law, who it seems was the 3rd member of her marriage.
She's very like Lorelei, but it's all coloured by her own past and situation which is why she has such issues with Lorelei.
