I like to consider myself a well-rounded gamer, especially more so recently, as I like to play different types of genres. Growing up though I was mainly into rpgs and first-person shooters so I never got a chance to play the original Mafia games. I remember reading magazines about them and had heard about them from various friends, but for me they faded into the background due to GTA. As time passed, I completely forgot about the Mafia series until the 3rd one released, which had gotten mixed reviews. People either hated it or loved it, so I decided to just forget about the series all together.
It wasn't until I got a gaming pc in early 2020 that I started looking at games I had missed out on when I saw that Mafia 3 was on sale for a really good price. I decided to read up on reviews and watch lots of gameplay videos to see if the game would be something I would enjoy, which led to a purchase. I wish I had given this series a try when it first released because I've had so much fun with the 3rd one and surprisingly no longer enjoy GTA. As I have never played the 1st or 2nd game in the series, I would love to experience where it all started.
What I enjoyed about the 3rd Mafia was the characters and the freedom that you have to take this character and become this big-time person. It's what I originally enjoyed so much about GTA with the 4th one being favorite. I would spend hours every day playing GTA 4 with friends online so naturally when the 5th one released, I had to buy it. Something struck me different about it and I just found myself not caring for the characters or the story. It just felt like it was more of the same as past GTA games but like the focus was more on the multiplayer aspect of the game.
I believe that is why Mafia 3 drew me in, and according to so many, it's not even the best in the series. Admittedly I haven't finished the 3rd Mafia game, but it's due to not wanting to finish the game until I play the 1st two. I really like who Lincoln is and getting to see a side of history that I wasn't around for has been fascinating. I love a good revenge story and this game really has done it well, at least for me personally. It's also been exciting to see what it could be like to be part of a Mafia, which is why I would like to experience Mafia 1.
Video games are not realistic even when they try to be because too much realism and drain the fun out of games, but there is no denying that a good game can take you to a place where you would never imagine. That is why I became a gamer to experience worlds created by people and play a character whom I could never become.
In Mafia Definitive Edition, you play as Thomas Angelo who helps two gang members of the Salieri crime family by helping them escape an ambush of a rival family. You are then offered a position within the Salieri family, but refuse until the rival family retaliates against you for helping. You quickly get involved and rise the ranks of the Mafia. The game takes place during the 1930s, a time where organized crime was at its highest and you get to experience the culture, classic cars and music of that time period. This is why I would love to play this game, because I'll never get to experience that time period. Getting to see how people lived would be truly fascinating and playing as a mafia member sounds really exciting.
From the gameplay videos I have seen of this game, the developers recreated the 1930s and you definitely feel like you're living during that time period. This is like a love letter to that time period and it's really exciting to see how they captured it perfectly.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and to whomever decides to be generous.
