I had my eye on Griftlands for... about a year now? Not sure. A long time, really. Enough to forget of its name, and just remember "hey the card game with 2 decks and tons of character interaction was super cool". I didn't remember the name, or the company. So I couldn't find it, really. But I remembered it seeming really fun, and potentially able to fill what Slay the Spire (one of my favorite games ever, still) was missing for me - strong lore and a memorable world.
Then, I was looking for some games on the Epic Games Store sale like 3 months ago (mostly curiosity) and I found a game with an appealing graphics style that caught my attention. Can you guess what game it was? Yeah, spoiler alert - it was Griftlands. Having already sunk 200 hours in StS (and growing kind of bored of it, what a lame game, only 200 hours for 15 dollars). Unhappily, I was in a far worse financial state than when buying StS, so I couldn't spare the monies.
Fairly recently, Griftlands debuted on Steam. With a demo (if you are making games, please release demos or guides with films! They really help see whether the mechanics are fun!). I threw myself at the demo and completed it rather quickly - but I loved how the cards and mechanical aspects interwine with the story! It felt like, instead of being a kind-of traditional roguelike dungeon crawler with mechanics reworked to play well with cards (that I consider StS to be - not a bad thing at all!) it used the cards and randomness to create a different story, every time. I would like to play the full game really much - and for that, I'd like to ask for your help.
But, you might ask, why buy me a game? After all, it is spending money on a total stranger. Since you are reading this request you might have a plan to gift someone something anyway - so I'll try to convince you why Griftlands, and why me:
Griftlands has tons of content and more to come
While I bet the mechanical depth of Griftlands is lower than the StS one, the way mechanics and story interwines in this game is (I think) revolutionary in roguelites. Quick example - giving people gifts. Basically, it's like buying relics in Slay the Spire in the sense that you spend money and get a bonus, but it also makes a difference in how the character treats and talks to you. I'm not exactly sure, but I also think that the random quests prioritize the characters you're close with. If a character hates you, however, you get a debuff - so you need to consider your deck and what it does to decide whose toes to step on. Again, the consequences are both mechanical and in the story the run will result in.
Klei released all their games in Early Access and always completed them
There's no risk that Griftlands will be abandoned or a cashgrab full of bugs. While I didn't like Don't Starve (I'm not a fan of survival games, simply) it was a very polished experience and had lots of things to do. Each game, from what I've seen, from Klei followed the same pattern of release. So Griftlands will be completed, too
I play all the games I get from giveaways
I got 16 games from GoG. Some more from other subreddits, too. While I didn't like them all, and only played some of them for like 2 hours (who the hell gave positive reviews to Flesh Eaters, that game was genuinely awful) I gave them all a honest chance. Some of these games became even my all-time faves (in particular Renowned Explorers). I'm also poor, and - as many people - got laid off from my job with the COVID-19 situation, which made things harder. I'm thankful to anyone who gave me a game, in general
