Hi, GoG, this is another Mirror's Edge: Catalyst request. Sorry that most of you gotta see it again. I don't like asking for games but this is one I really want to play.
Starting notes:
An /u/Ali-Sama hug, stay fresh.
This game has not been released yet, so it is only purchaseable via The Mirror's Edge site and Origin, or GMG.
I have added the closed Beta notes after the 1st game explaination.
This song is still here, it's a remix of the Mirror's Edge 1 "official" song. I'm keeping it here again because it's nice.
A bit about myself
My name is Roi, I'm a 20 years old college student that very close to graduating as a Practical Electronics Engineer. I'm building sort of a wonky robot. I've graduated from highschool 2 years ago and went through a program that would both give me a both a degree and will get me into a ( relatively ) prestigious position in the Israeli Air Force, which I will be enlisted to in the 7th of June this year.
Some gaming history - I've been at it as far as I could remember. I'd do stupid shit back when I was 3-4, later got into games like GTA 2, Midtown Madness 1-2, Lego Racer 1-2, free CD games that came with cereal, Lego Island, etc.. later I was getting into games like Need For Speed Underground 2, Gunz Online, GTA San Andreas and Vice City and all sorts of small games I forgot about long ago. Later I got into games like CoD that blew my mind at the time, didn't think games can look so not-crappy, featuring good voice acting, impressive graphics and animations and good missions. Didn't have MP at the time because all I had to get games was eMule with a download speed of 15Kb/s because my parents despised ( and still do ) gaming and would never buy / allow me to buy games. It was only when CoD MW2 was released that I was hardly able to convince my pop to let me buy myself the game, and it was the first really good MP game I played. Got me into the whole thing. Later got GTA IV and all that jazz, until I survived until this point to have a decent collection of memories and games.
As a student that always had a hard time learning ( I wasn't that dumb, just a lazy/not a good learner ), I couldn't affoard a big job, and had a stable small job getting me 180 NIS a month ( 45$ ), with which I could accumilate money to get myself something good once a-lot-of-time ( along with personal expenses ). Now enough about me, lets get into the game.
Mirror's Edge 1
Before I'm going to talk about Mirror's Edge: Catalyst, I'll have to expand about the first. For a game from 2009 it looks absolutely magical. I'm not sure the gaming community was exposed to anything like it before, especailly mechanically, but I could be wrong about that part. It's beautiful, simple but eye catching grpahics, with very sharp differences between areas, buildings and objectives. You couldn't tell the quality of most textures sometimes, I was confused by the colors game, some places filled with colors and others paper white. The atmosphere is quiet and calm, looks and sounds like an utopic city until shit starts to get rough fo the protagonist.
Many say the story of the first game was bad, but I had my fun with it, I think it's pretty good, It's about Faith, a woman that is a part of a froup called "Runners", in a city that looks utopian, clean and peaceful, but is actually all rotten under the surface, ruled by corporations and is under a massive net surveillance to "keep the city safe", to oppress everyone in the process. So the government keeps track of everyone, the little crime there is gets eliminated. But the government doesn't only hate crime, it also hates freedom of speech and people who want ot bring change to the city. This is where the Runner's job starts, they handle deliveries for people through the roofs of the city, away from the eyes of police and the authorities. They have gained the title of criminals.
You play as Faith Connors, a Runner, that has a long history with the city and its security forces. She lost her mother in a young age, in a protest against the city's violent and oppressive nature, and left to seek a new place to call home after the couldn't deal with her broken family. She was "adopted" by the Runners and worked with them until the time the game takes place in. The Runners get in trouble following an assassination of an important figure, and faith infiltrates into the city's most vicious forces, trying to save the only thing left she cares about. I'm pretty shitty at explaining plots without butchering them, so I won't go any further.
The game is mainly about parkouring with very little fighting elements, meaning you can win the game even without shooting or killing anyone, But I'm not that kind of guy.. I steal their guns and kill their cop buddies. The game keeps putting interesting "puzzles" in front of you, sometimes in your face and sometimes not, of how to reach this other point without ending up splatted on the ground or zapped to death or taken down by the police. Some of them I didn't quite remember even in my 2nd and 3rd playthroughs. Even though people didn't like the story, I really loved it and the whole setting and sights and music, and would very much recommend it to whoever finds it interesting from this review. It gets as low as 5$, and if you love the game as me
Mirror's Edge: Catalyst
And now! the second game. The [1]st trailer shows off tons of.. cheesy.. buzz-sentances or scenes that show off some cinematic action and dialouges. I don't think it represents what the game is about, but screw it. It looks really great, and luckily, it ain't the only trailer so there's more to look at.
The second game takes place 2 years after the first one, when Faith gets out of prison and return to the lines of the Runners. They seem to have developed since the first game, many new allies were added, and it seems like there are more stuff to do. They Runners have become very very moderate and cautious, yet Faith the protagonist goes after a Gabriel Kruger, a CEO of a big corporation that works on agricultural innovations, but allegedly works on some blackwater, shady, illegal inhumane human testing of an unknown nature. Faith wants to take on that guy, even though everyone who is in her favor tells her she shouldn't do it. That's where the story begins, and I don't know much more about it for now. There's a whole mission gameplay teaser, but there is no way I'm going to ruin it for myself just to have a sneak peak.
EA and DICE realese dev diaries and sneak peaks and pretty nice stuff. Most of the things they let out are mechanics, visuals, features, things that have changd fro mthe first game, and about the depth added to the world, in the form of city districts, movement, combat and different factions. The first game was very vague about most of these things, only thing that was nearly perfected was movement. I will now go over the features after my beta experience.
MIRROR'S EDGE : CATALYST CLOSED BETA NOTES
- note - every time I tried to screencap I had to wait 20-30 secs for the image to "be processed" (?), and they all came out in 1200x700 in MSpaint. Thanks, Obama ( and Origin ).
I will start by saying that I didn't play much of the story ( past tutorial, and maybe a single main quest mission side mission ) because I simply don't want to spoil myself. That's why I havn't watched the 15 minutes gameplay video on Youtube. While downloading the game one of the GoG community members ( coughironcough) pointed me to a video about some guy ranting about how big a pile of shit this game is, and that he couldn't run it above Medium with his double Titan X's. I wasn't really impressed, and waited to try myself. And I have.
Story
The story has changed a bit. Faith isn't a lone runner like the first game, but is surrounded by runner-buddies, old rivals, mentors and friends. Merc ( 1st game mentor ) has disappeared with no sign or mention. Suddenly Birdman and Noah have become important figures in the Runners guild. I don't really have a problemwith that. There are now side quests with hidden objectives and collectibles. They arn't that bad too.
City and Skyline
Sure is beautiful. Well, at least in the sky level. The streets look kinda bad. I hope this is exclusive to the Beta version ( or atleast will be fixed ),cause that's some freaky stuff. The buildings look good and pretty similar to ME1. Except there's much more structural diversity and more colors, which is pretty neat. I Think most of the city isn't accesible since closed beta. I hope the rest of it will be as pretty.
The Beta map shows blank parts of the city ( which I hope are there only for beta purpouses and not.. forever )
Something might be buggy with the graphics options because I had to reset to get only a non-full change of the grahpics I set. I had some weird graphics bugs all over, and blurriness because of the screenshot downgrade. For some reasons all posters and commertials are very low resolution. Most likely a Beta thing, not to overload the size. Still the city looks Pretty neat.. Notice the interesting architecture.
Perk system
I didn't expect that one. You gain EXP And skill points to unlock more gear and moves. I don't mind this since the things that are crutial for me can be unlocked within an hour or two of gameplay ( maybe even less ). It's kinda weird however that I can't do the things I'm used to from ME1 right off the bat. As long as I can unlock even better, more comfortable moves with it, I think I can handle it.
Combat
It's not as shit as people make it to be, but it's not top of the line either. You have many options of how to handle enemies, how to attack them or dodge them, but not all buttton combos are smooth or working 50% of the times ( dodge, kick in a certein way or knock into other people ). Otherwise it's ok and I'll allow it.
Conclusion
I hope the devs accept the various complaints, optimize the game better and make a good job in completing this game. It was really fun running in an enhanced Mirror's Edge world. I really enjoyed the running around and all. 26th of May! woo!
Now after I got that out of the way..
The Districts
Downtown - The part of the city that looks like the first game - has the 1st Mirror's Edge look and beautiful architectural style, with all the pipes and vents to move on, spirals and way out there shapes. This is how it looks like.
Anchor - A newer part of the city, home of many tall buildings, and with them many corporates. Also a gathering place for many young people, having a rich nightlife and being a good place for shopping. Here's a pic of it.
The View - A mostly residential area for richer part of society, has a lot of family activities and a view to the sea. Some of the looks.
Each one should have its own charm, aesthetics and activities which people know little to none about. Even if you don't like it, you gotta admit it is just great looking. And if they reall let you explore all this, this is my most anticipated game of 2016. Hands down.
Movement
This is the [2]nd trailer, about movement. In the first game, movement was great. In some situations it wasn't as smooth as you would hope for, but it still felt great. This time around, the devs promised (and kinda delivered as shown in this [4])th tailer, a much smoother movement system which allows different types of navigation (parkour) through many more types of buildings, edgier stunts and hopefully much more fluid movement.
Combat
The [3]rd trailer shows combat. That's where the beef at. Kinda. Instead of awkwardly trying to float-kick your enemies in ME1 or awkwardly try to snatch their gun only to promptly get smacked in the face by it and die ( 80% of the time ), you can use your surrounding to damage/kill/stun/whoop your enemies. You can jump off a wall to deliver an off the wall kick, you can jump at them from a height, you can slide and hit them in the balls or something I'd think. Huge improvement.
The Factions
There are three competing factions in the city of Glass.
The Runners - Off grid people who wish to not be a part of a city ruled by tycoons and coroporates, prefer sticking to their friends and make a living by making sketchy deliveries and actions.
The Conglomerate - 13 corporations who run the city ( aka a recipe for disaster ). Highly secured, ruthless and will keep order and status quo no matter what. They keep the facade standing while deep inside the city is in fear.
Black November - A group of outlaws who try to fuck shit up for the Conglomerate ( corporation people ). They don't want to live under corporates who dictate their lives and might even hurt their family in the past.
Unlike the first game you will probably not be a ghost in a city of cops and "city noises", but actually have some people around, friends, foes, hopefully bystanders.. I really like the fact they chose to put a whole lot more of humanity into this game. As much as the first was, all the city felt dead. There's also a dynamic day-night cycle, which is new and refreshing. Wonder how this magical place would look at night. Another very exciting feature is us being able to free roam the city this time around. In the first game you sure had a view, but you just walked through a planned map with little to no ways to improvise or explore the area yourself. I could finally roam this beautiful city with no void stopping me, not tied to any quests or missions, and just have a look around. Glad the devs seen the potential in this feature.
Why do I want this game?
Mirror's Edge 1 is a wonderful game. Magical, awesome atmosphere, great soundtrack, appealing graphics, even if basic. If there's thing I like in gaming is an envireoment and setting that immerse you or makes you feel like your'e seeing a whole new different world. I can't remember being so captivated by a game, maybe since Portal 2. Even in the closed areas, it was really fun running and jumping around. In Mirror's Edge Catalyst you will have the option to roam freely the city, without the big restrictions of the first game.
This 2nd game looks like the devs took everything from the first game, looked at what is flawed and was missing, and put it in. After they did, they looked again and they added more. And when they were done, it looks like it was polished to perfection. I at least hope all of this is true. I'm dying to find out.
I want to explore this city, with its secrets, complex terrain, different districts with each having its awesome unique style. I want to fight shit and do all this great combat system. I want to get to know all these factions and see what I can get out of rivaling or befriending them, of possible. I wanna run around and admire the view.
I think I would really love this game and I would really, really enjoy it.
Why can I not get it?
The Origin price stands at 60 Euros, which is more than I make a month at the small job I can afford as a college student without seeing myself decend into failure at class shittier grades ( they ain't that good to begin with ). It's much, much more than I usually can spend on gaming and GoG regularly.
However, once I figured out gifting through Origin isn't a thing, a G2A ( yeah, I know.. ) pre order deal came out, at 45$. Which is alot for me to handle, way too much sadly.
Conclusion
I don't know what more to say. I really loved the first game, the second game looks like everything the first game was but polished and had a shit ton of options that players hoped for and wanted. It looks full of life ( as much as a mostly white, glossy city can look ), challenging, and one that lets you run free.
I would just really like to have it and play it, before I need to go to the army, and then not to have 3 yers to even look at it.
I'm still shitty at doing conclusions, so this is how you achieve Global Elite in CS:GO
Here are some trailers for refrence.
[2] Movement Trailer
[3] Combat Trailer
[4] Gameplay Trailer
Trailers that were not in the request
The City And Narrative Trailer-Dev-Diary
Social Play ( isn't as horrible as it looks, in-gamish rather than shitty DRM policy announced )
IMPORTANT ISSUE
As I found out in GoG chat, it isn't really possible to gift games through Origin. Which sucks, a lot. It even kinda kills the purpous of this request. I did however find another deal, by the really not compelling G2A, that stands at 45$ for a pre-order key, which is around 25-30$ cheaper than Origin are offering. It's a huge rish that I'm sure many of you wouldn't take yourself, but I'm putting it in here just in case.
GMG option added - it is 60$, can be found Here
