[Request][Origin] Mirror's Edge Catalyst
Author Summary
RoiMan is in Origin
Post Body

Hi! so this is my Mirror's Edge Catalyst request. I've been really hyped about this one, and since I loved the living crap outta the first one, I'm going all in on this.

A bit about myself

My name is Roi, I'm a 20 years old college student, very close to graduating after two years of trying to become a Practical Electronics Engineer. I live in Israel with my family until it's my time to serve in the army for around 3 yeras ( starting June 2016 ), then I'm free.

Starting notes:

  1. This game has not been released yet, so it is only purchaseable via The Mirror's Edge site and Origin.

  2. The [#] represent trailers I have linked in the bottom of the request.

That's all. Dive right in!

I am talking about Mirror's Edge Catalyst. Words cannot express how I loved the first franchise, Mirror's Edge, with his simple yet beautiful graphics, great mechanics I have yet to see before, stunning atmosphere, soothing soundtrack, and likeable characters. I will go over the 1st game without spoilers, just so you could get a background. The plot unfolds in the city of Glass, not too far in the future, a city that seems utopian, clean and safe, but under the surface it's rotten, all the way to the core. The city has a massive surveillance net to keep track of all the citizens and make sure nothing breaks the strict security rules and causes too much panic. The city mainly targets the Runners, a group of some say vigilantes, but mainly run underground ( ironically by running on roofs ) deliveries service. You play as Faith Connors, a Runner, that has a long history with the city and its security forces. She lost her mother in a young age, in a protest against the city's violent nature, and left to seek a new place to call home after the couldn't deal with her broken family. She was "adopted" by the Runners and worked with them until the time the game takes place in. The Runners get in trouble following an assassination of an important figure, and faith infiltrates into the city's most vicious forces, trying to save the only thing left she cares about. I'm pretty shitty at explaining plots without butchering them, so I hope you bear with me :]

The game is mainly about parkouring with very little fighting elements, meaning you can win the game even without shooting or killing anyone, but I knew I liked picking up a SAW every once in a while and mow down the few pesky enemies. The game keeps putting interesting "puzzles" in front of you, sometimes in your face and sometimes not, of how to reach this other point without ending up splatted on the ground or zapped to death or taken down by the police. Some of them I didn't quite remember even in my 2nd and 3rd playthroughs. The story might not be the best part, but I still very much liked it, and everything around it just dwarfed it. If you havent played Mirror's Edge by now, I'd urge you to try so, it gets pretty cheap when on sale.

I will finally leave the 1st game, as much as I liked it, and move to the anticipated, second one. [1] It is set place two or more years later, after faith got out of prison ( 2 years sentence, unclear why to me but I assume related to the 1st game ) and returned to the lines of the Runners, who seem to got a lot more moderate and cautious. According to the trailers she is going after Gabriel Kruger, the CEO of Kruger that allegedly performs shady, inhumane testing on humans in a hidden part of his facility. I don't think the trailers did a good job of projecting what the game really is about, instead they have some movie-esqe lines that characters say to each other, which made most of the fans pretty upset, but EA and Dice released other trailers, including gameplay, that show the other aspects of the game. The devs keep a nice dev diary that shows off said aspects of the game, such as the districts of the city, prominent groups, characters, combat and movement.. I will go on on a few of them.

The Districts

  • Downtown - The part of the city that looks like the first game - has the 1st Mirror's Edge look and beautiful architectural style, with all the pipes and vents to move on, spirals and way out there shapes.

  • Anchor - A newer part of the city, home of many tall buildings, and with them many corporates. Also a gathering place for many young people, having a rich nightlife and being a good place for shopping.

  • The View - A mostly residential area for richer part of society, has a lot of family activities and a view to the sea.

Each one should have its own charm, aesthetics and activities which people know little to none about.

Movement

[2] In the first game, movement was great. In some situations it wasn't as smooth as you would hope for, but it still felt great. The devs promised ( and the gameplaye trailer kinda delivered[4] ) a much smoother movement system, allowing more kinds of navigation through more types of buildings "terrain", edgier stunts and hopefully a lot more eh.. fluidity of movement?

Combat

[3]That's where the beef at. Kinda. Instead of awkwardly trying to float-kick your enemies in ME1 or awkwardly try to snatch their gun only to promptly get smacked in the face by it and die ( 80% of the time ), you can use your surrounding to damage/kill/stun/whoop your enemies. You can jump off a wall to deliver an off the wall kick, you can jump at them from a height, you can slide and hit them in the balls or something I'd think. Huge improvement.

The Factions

There are three competing factions in the city of Glass.

  • The Runners - Off grid people who wish to not be a part of a city ruled by tycoons and coroporates, prefer sticking to their friends and make a living by making sketchy deliveries and actions.

  • The Conglomerate - 13 corporations who run the city ( aka a recipe for disaster ). Highly secured, ruthless and will keep order and status quo no matter what. They keep the facade standing while deep inside the city is in fear.

  • Black November - A group of outlaws who try to fuck shit up for the Conglomerate. They don't want to live under corporates who dictate their lives and might even hurt their family in the past.

Unlike the first game you will probably not be a ghost in a city of cops and "city noises", but actually have some people around, friends, foes, hopefully bystanders.. I really like the fact they chose to put a whole lot more of humanity into this game. As much as the first was, all the city felt dead. There's also a dynamic day-night cycle, which is new and refreshing. Wonder how this magical place would look at night. Another very exciting feature is us being able to free roam the city this time around. In the first game you sure had a view, but you just walked through a planned map with little to no ways to improvise or explore the area yourself. I could finally roam this beautiful city with no void stopping me, not tied to any quests or missions, and just have a look around. Glad the devs seen the potential in this feature.

Why do I want this game?

I am getting great vibes from this game. I have two games that their atmosphere and vibe left me in awe; Portal 2 and Mirrors Edge. While in Portal 2 everything is dead and eventually turns into a spotless architectural wonder, Mirrors Edge starts as a spotless utopia ( a facade, but still ) that just is a treat to the eyes. I have clocked 30 hours on Mirrors Edge 1 ( probably more to come ), have probably finished it 3 times, and each time I'm surprised by how awesome it is, even if it dwarves in comparison of what ME2 could be.

I can't imagine how awesome it would be to just roam the city, with the day/night cycle and my own music. They made it look like a masterpiece, big and diverse, shiny and clean, sevenfold of what the first game city was. Main protagonist is very interesting, the new companions and factions look like they could add so much needed spice into this game. New climbing and traversing mechanics looks great and could get the player through much more intense urban jungle. Dying to finally try it out.

I really think I would have great fun with this one.

Why can I not get it?

The Origin price stands at 60 Euros, which is more than I make a month at the small job I can afford as a college student without seeing myself decend into failure at class shittier grades ( they ain't that good to begin with ). It's much, much more than I usually can spend on gaming and GoG regularly.

Conclusion I'm not that good with words, this request was a job and a half for me, but I'm pleased with it. I really loved the first game and this looks like a very promising sequal that could be so much better than the original. It has everything that I love, it have many devs that look like hipsters that are very, very pleased with the work they did which kinda looks like a good sign to me.

What more can I say? have a vid of a Cockatoo going nuts.

If you made it down here, I would like to thank you very much for reading all of my req.

I'm adding some of the trailers for refrence.
