My past with The Witcher

The beginning

Well, where do I start. I think I will just begin by the beginning since I remember it as it wat yesterday. We have found ourselfs in late october, on the PCMR subreddit. I had just finished building my rig and setting up Steam when I discovered the fact that I had absolutely not a single idea of which game I would play. So what do you do then? You ask other gamers about their experiences. I sought a game which had choices which would affect your story. Within 3 minutes I received multiple comments praising The Witcher series. After watching a Trailer and some Gameplay a place in my heart was captured by Geralt(Protagonist) When 2 days later the Halloween sale started and both Witcher 1 and 2 were in the sale there was no doubt, those games needed to be a part of my Steam library.

The games

After installing and watching the intro I was blasted away, I could not wait to start my adventure! Fifty hours later I found myself in an ice landscape with the endboss. I will not spoil it but after killing him, I discovered the biggest twist ever. It was so obvious yet so unnaturally. I finished the credits in shock and still could not believe what I had done. And that was the moment I was emotionally bounded towards Geralt.

After recovering from that shock I just installed The Witcher 2 and played it straight away. But the Witcher 2 was different. Where your choices could remain neutral in The Witcher 1, The Witcher 2 forced you to pick a side. And here too, fifty hours later I finished one of the two possible paths. And again it was an emotionally ride. Picking a side while you knew you would ditch someone just makes you feel bad. At the end I was left in shock again but not in the same way as in Witcher 1. Where in Witcher 1 that emotional ending was the same for everyone, the ending in Witcher 2 was really dependant of your choices. And that was the moment I realized I did not know much about Geralt his past, so I decided to read the books.

The books

The Witcher games are based on the books of Andrzej Sapkowski. There are eight books and I am now finding myself in part four and everything is clearing up. Every subtile hint about the books which was implemented in the games is now visible for me. I already found another Witcher fan to discuss the books with and I can not wait for The Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3

After reading my background I will dig into the game self. There are some differences between The Witcher 3 and part one and two.

An open world

Where the world in Witcher 1 and 2 was quite open and big, it wasn't really Open World. You could see it as an open world on a small scale. You had quite some land to discover but it wasn't Skyrim like big. That is different in The Witcher 3. The world in The Witcher 3 is really an open world. It is 35 times as big as The Witcher 2 map and every building with a door is accesible. It was even bigger but when the devs(CDPR) didn't know what to fill the gaps with they inplemented fast travel.

Choices

You will have more and better choices. As stated by CDPR, "each choice will lead to a greater evil." And what is the best of the choices in the Witcher series? All your choices in the previous games will be included in The Witcher 3 and will affect the beginning of the game and the persona's you will encounter later. CDPR also stated that due to all the choices there are more than 300 variations your ending.

Understanding it

When The Witcher 3 will come out, I will have read all the books and so understood all the lore and past around Geralt. I will know what drives Geralt for his quest and I will know what his relationship is with all the important characters since they did made an entry in the books and so will make an entry in The Witcher 3.

Well...I guess that is it, think I have said everything and haven't forgotten a thing. Thanks for taking the time to read it!
