Who?
Hi! I'm /u/thecastleunderthesea, other than video games I mostly read manga and just lurk in other subreddits.
What?
Civilization VI is a turn-based strategy 4X (eXplore,eXpand,eXploit,eXterminate) video game where you control a civilization with their own unique abilities and units to aim for certain victory conditions (domination, cultural, science, diplomatic, and religious). You first start off with a settler unit to find a good starting spot for your capital with good resources then eventually explore the land while expanding more cities for your empire and exploiting its natural resources while exterminating foes.
Why?
Do I want the game? - I first started being aware of the Civ franchise by hearing of it in memes like One More Turn and Gandhi of all people being nuke happy. I tried Civ V first through family sharing since my brother owned it and admittedly I got confused and overwhelmed by its mechanics that eventually turned me off it. 5 years pass and I somehow tried to give it another chance and it finally clicked. Although I always just stay in Prince difficulty I still get to enjoy roleplaying as various leaders. Capturing cities then connecting them by roads to Rome, burning cities as the Huns, or earning money while spreading Islam as the Arabs I kinda get lost in the fun most of the time instead of aiming for instant victory. I want to play Civ VI since it's the most recent game in the franchise meaning it changed some mechanics and added new ones like having a religious victory since it didn't have that in Civ V. One of the biggest ones is having to build specific districts for specializations just like in real life of having an industrial district, military district, commercial districts and the like. It would add more strategy to plan out what district goes with what city in your empire and I can't quite wait to try it out myself.
The Platinum Edition? - For the two major expansions: Rise and Fall, and Gathering Storm each with their own added mechanics and new civilizations to play with. In Rise and Fall it introduces the mechanic of having Golden Ages or Dark ages and having your cities have loyalty to your empire as long as you're running it well. Gathering Storm introduces natural disasters and climate change and how your actions as a leader have far reaching effects not only to your own but other civilizations as well. Being near rivers grants good food for your cities but it now adds threats of flooding. Being scientifically advanced over your neighbors might now eventually bite you in the ass for using coal and oil to get there. Just some more added stuff to consider in the mid to late game and the most recent balance changes makes me want to play with both expansions to the base game.
A Steam gift card? - Sadly the bundle is not giftable so the only avenue to get it is by buying it directly hence the need of a gift card.
Can't I afford it? - Just a bit out of a job at the moment and savings are used for basic necessities which inflation is not helping with one bit.
Thank you for the time and consideration!
